The iron harvest is the phrase given to the annual practice of farmers removing unexploded ordinance, munitions, and other military artifacts dating from World War I. These still very dangerous items are often found in fields throughout Belgium and France, and hundreds of people have died from handling them. It is estimated that one shell out of every four that was used in World War I did not detonate.
