The Minnesota Starvation Experiment was a study on the effects of human starvation to be used by aid workers following World War II. The study lasted over one year, with the volunteers undergoing a control period before a six month “semi-starvation” period with daily caloric intake at approximately 1500 calories per day. The participants lost approximately 25% of their body weight during this period before two separate rehabilitation periods. The results were published in 1950 under the title The Biology of Human Starvation.
