Each year, a college football rivalry game between Yale University and Harvard University takes place. For the game in 2004, approximately twenty Yale students disguised themselves as the fictitious “Harvard Pep Squad” and handed out signs to Harvard fans. At a coordinated time, the organizers behind the prank instructed the Harvard fans to display the cards in unison, which they claimed spelled out “GO HARVARD” but in fact spelled “WE SUCK”. The result of the prank was that the Harvard fans then displayed a message saying “WE SUCK”, visible to the entire stadium and eventually garnering large coverage in national media.

SkiFree is a computer game created by Chris Pirih, a Microsoft programmer, that was released in the Microsoft Entertainment Pack software bundle. A relatively simple skiing game, it is best remembered for the “Abominable Snowman” that appears after the player has completed the course. The yeti-like creature attempts to chase down and then eat the skier. Pirih had originally created the game for his own personal use, but a manager at Microsoft saw him playing it and requested that Microsoft be able to release the game commercially. In recent years, Pirih has developed an updated version of the game compatible with 32 bit operating systems.

The Minnesota Starvation Experiment was a study on the effects of human starvation to be used by aid workers following World War II. The study lasted over one year, with the volunteers undergoing a control period before a six month “semi-starvation” period with daily caloric intake at approximately 1500 calories per day. The participants lost approximately 25% of their body weight during this period before two separate rehabilitation periods. The results were published in 1950 under the title The Biology of Human Starvation.

One of the earliest encounters to gain widespread publication, the Mantell UFO incident occurred on January 7th, 1948, when pilot Captain Thomas F. Mantell was killed while chasing a UFO in Kentucky. Flying for the Kentucky Air National Guard, Mantell was an experienced pilot. A large object had been sighted by multiple witnesses that day, and Mantell was in a group giving chase. He continued to climb his aircraft in elevation, but likely blacked out after passing 25,000 feet in altitude. The incident is considered one of the “classic” UFO cases which escalated the UFO phenomenon in the public mind.
